Gear Ratio and RPM Calculator

Pick a transmission from the list or type in your own ratios, set the tire, rear gear, and shift rpm, and it plots every gear with the shift trace over it. Hover the chart to read rpm at any speed, drag across it to zoom, and use the numbered gear buttons to drop gears from the plot. Add a second setup to compare two rear gears, or two whole transmissions, in mph or km/h. Copy link puts the whole setup in the URL so you can save it or share it.

Notes

  • Pick the ZF 8HP and it draws the output shaft limits on the chart: 7,000 rpm as the recommended ceiling, and 8,500 rpm where the output shaft bearing is maxed.
  • The presets are the published factory ratio sets. The T56 Magnum shipped in two: 2.66 / 1.78 / 1.30 / 1.00 / 0.80 / 0.63 and 2.97 / 2.10 / 1.46 / 1.00 / 0.74 / 0.50. The TKX runs a 2.87 or 3.27 first gear with a 0.68, 0.72, or 0.81 overdrive, so the two sets here are the common pairings.
  • The stock BMW transmissions are in there so you can check a swap against what the car came with. The GS6-53BZ is the 335i 6-speed manual, and the ZF 6HP19/21 is the E9x/E8x automatic.
  • Converter slip reduces every speed by the percentage you enter, applied to both setups. Leave it at zero for a lockup converter or a manual gearbox.
  • Turn a gear off and it re-runs the shift trace through the gears still on, so each upshift lands in the next one. That also models the MaxxECU gear 1 lockout on the 8HP, which starts in 2nd.
  • The 8HP output shaft limits and how to gear around them are covered in the 8HP master guide, along with the per-gear rpm limits worth setting for 7th and 8th.
  • Transmission options for the E9x swap, and what each one needs, are in the parts list transmission section.
